NIAS Transition Plan for an Integrated Approach to Development and Environment in the Power Sector

Workshop Report

Abstract

This is a workshop report from a DST-NIAS Stakeholder Consultation Workshop (23 January 2021) discussing the NIAS Transition Plan for Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) in India, with specific reference to the Southern Region. The report presents NIAS’s proposal for an optimal electricity mix approach over the next 10-20 years, including analysis of air quality around TPPs indicating that flue-gas desulphurisation units are not required at every plant while high-efficiency electrostatic precipitators are needed across all TPPs to reduce particulate matter and comply with 2015 stack emission standards. The report also discusses projected environmental benefits and cost savings for state generating companies (GENCOs) from implementing the NIAS Transition Plan.
