Renewable energy scenarios for sustainable electricity supply in Nigeria

Journal Article

Abstract

Ensuring energy security and climate change mitigation are current global sustainability issues, and renewable energy will play a key role in achieving synergy between these objectives. Using a bottom-up model, this study examines business-as-usual and 100% renewable electricity generation scenarios for Nigeria. Results indicate Nigeria can achieve 100% renewable electricity supply by 2050 through a mix of technologies, especially utility-scale solar PV and onshore wind. CO2 emissions are expected to peak by 2030 and decline to zero by 2050. A transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2050 is found to be a cheaper option than the conventional pathway in terms of total system cost, and could create around 1.54 million jobs for Nigerians by 2050.
